2010 March Mashness

Postby Dave M. on Mon Feb 22, 2010 7:13 pm

Here's the info on the annual St. Cloud comp. I've had good luck with this one in the past. While still a small comp, I think it has been growing over the last few years.

Entries due by this Sunday - better get them in! I'll probably put in my Scottish and maybe another oak beer and see if either one does any better at the previous comps.

I'm going to try to bottle some of my coffee stout and barleywine tomorrow. I'll probably have to get them into Midwest Sunday. If anyone else is planning on taking some in...can I send them with you?

Hey thanks for the credit Eric! I was pleasantly surprised for my first competition to place with 2 of my 3 entries. I'll definitely be registering under Jack of All Brews for future competitions!

That is as soon as you pay your yearly dues.

Nope, third there too. I'm interested to see the score sheets from Mashness. Its not that good of a Bock, but I guess it was enough to place.

Haha I'll be sure to bring dues to the next meeting and I will trade my MHBA card in a for a JOAB card. I did register under "Brewing Network" for Mashness as I've learned more from the podcasts than anywhere else.

Weird - for some reason my scoresheets just arrived yesterday. Not sure why so late.

I thought it was kind of funny - on the oak aged brown ale I put in - 2 of the 3 judges had to lower their score to match the other certified judge. The novices had it in the upper 30's, the certified judge in the mid 20's. I could tell by seeing the erase marks on the score sheets, and the fact that the comments were all very positive, but scores didn't match the comments. I'm guessing the certified judge was not a big fan of oaked beers, he commented about astringency from the oak.

Funny you mentioned it Dave because I noticed the same thing too! I had a scoresheet with my California Common from a non-certified judge where one of my scores was erased and penciled in with something significantly lower than his other scores and seemingly not in line with the comments. Oh well... I did score over 30 from every judge on every beer entered, so I'll take the judges' generosity at this competition into account as much as I give myself any credit for a first competition. If I remember right my APA came out at 35.5, Irish Red at 35, and California Common at 31. I was just surprised at all the beer related swag I received, in addition to the two medal I scored 3.3 pounds of LME, a Cold Springs Brewery hat, and a Cargill t-shirt! I didn't know I would be getting anything other than my scoresheets, so that was rather nice of them to mail that to me.

Many years back, at this competiton, I actually went up there for the awards presentations, and one of my beers got a medal. The prize they gave me was a twenty pound jug of wheat LME! I ended up brewing 4 different batches of various wheat beers over 2 days to use it up.

Nice haul - you done good!
