Summary of 11/14/08 JAB Meeting @ Dave's house

 

Attendees:

 

1.      New Members

a.      Good to see a few new members and good turnout at this meeting.

b.      Club is up to 25 members

c.       New members should make sure we have your contact information and email, if we don’t already. Can be submitted to Eric through the email on the club website. Create a personal profile and send it as well and will get posted on website. (See website for examples.)

 

2.      Shirts

a.      There are still a few club shirts available for purchase. If interested, contact Dave for styles, sizes and price.

 

3.      Club Calendar

a.      Dave is working on putting together a club calendar to hand out at January meeting. Intent is to have all relevant information on the calendar, including meeting dates, contest deadlines and such. If anyone thinks of something they want on the calendar, contact Dave.

 

4.      Presentations

a.      We need members to volunteer to give presentations at upcoming meetings. Contact Eric if you want to present, or if you have an idea for a topic.  

b.      A couple of new suggestions/volunteers came up at meeting:

·        Andrew volunteered to present on roasting coffee. Date TBD.

·        Dave suggested a presentation on how to enter a contest. Date TBD.  

c.       Jon volunteered to present on an as of yet undetermined topic.

d.      Topics from this year have been:

·        Sanitation by Eric at Feb meeting

·        Caramel Malts by Chris at March meeting

·        Hop Growing by Jon at April Meeting

·        All Grain Demo/Wort Clarification by Chris at May meeting

·        Improving Extract Brews by Dave at June meeting

·        Ester/Phenol Balancing in Wheat Beers by Chris at July meeting

·        Beer & Health by Eric at September meeting

·        Oaked Beers by Dave at November meeting

 

5.      Meeting Hosts

a.      Need more members to host meetings. Eric and SaraJo are happy to host, but would like others to step in and host occasionally.

·        Jon volunteered to host in September for hop harvest.

·        Kent will host, date TBD.  

 

6.      Meeting Date

a.      Meetings will switch to 1st Friday of the month in 2009. However, there are 3 months in which holidays fall that weekend, January, July and September. For those months, the meeting will be the 2nd Friday.

 

7.      Officer positions

a.      Club will vote on 2009 officers at January meeting. If you are interested in becoming an officer or have questions on what the duties are, contact any of the officers. Current officers are:

·        President: Eric Wentling

·        Vice President: JD Ludford

·        Treasurer: Jim Trowbridge

·        Secretary: Dave Manley

·        Topic/Event Coordinator: Chris

 

8.      Summit Tour

a.      Chris is setting up a private tour of the Summit Brewery on Sunday, December 14. Time TBD.

b.      This is open to all club members.

c.       Question has been asked if friends/family members/non-club members can attend. First we need to find out how many club members plan on going and what the limit on our tour size is.

d.      Go to forum to indicate if you are going or not.

e.      Eric to contact Chris to see about size of tour.

 

9.      Club Only Competitions

a.      Nov/Dec – IPA’s: we tasted 2 IPA’s from Ty and Andy. Group voted Andy’s and the one to send, but later decided none would be sent to this competition.

b.      Jan/Feb – Belgian/French – bring to January meeting

 

10.  December meeting

a.      Spiced Ale tasting

b.      Yankee Swap – bring a wrapped gift and leave with a different gift. Gift should be beer/brewing related, not a gag gift, and around $10 in value.

 

11.  Stir plates

a.      Matt had some extra stir plates and gave them away. Way to go Matt!

a.      Dave gave presentation on oak aging beers. Despite turning into a junior high boy’s locker room, Dave got through the presentation and then had 5 variations of the same beer with different oaks for sampling.
