Summary of 1/18/08 JAB Meeting
Location: Brian's House
Attendees:
This was a full meeting, with many new and potential members. I did not get the list; I believe Jim updated the member roster with names, address and phone numbers. This will be posted on the member forum?
1. Officers: were chosen for the upcoming year. They are as follows:
a. President – Eric (remains in office for another term!)
b. Vice President – J.D. (new position, no hunting accidents like Dick Cheney, ok, J.D?)
c. Treasurer – Jim (also remains for another term)
d. Secretary – Dave (we decided that if the secretary will miss a meeting it is his responsibility to choose someone to take meeting minutes in his absence.)
e. Topic Coordinator – Chris (this is also a new position, and we will rename it when we can figure out a better title. Position will be in charge of determining topics & presentations for meetings and who will present them. Also will do much of the “event coordinating” such as tours, off-site meetings at brewpubs, etc. Dave did much of this the previous year and is willing to help out as much as needed.)
2. Selection of beer for AHA Club Only Jan/Feb Competition: Dark Lager
a. We had 2 beers: J.D’s Creamy Dark clone and Dave’s Doppelbock that was just bottled.
b. J.D.’s Creamy Dark was selected as our beer to submit.
c. Fargo brew club is conducting competition.
d. (This was not discussed at the meeting, but I’m thinking that for the AHA Club Only competitions, it should be up to the brewer of the chosen beer to submit it to the competition by the deadline?)
3. Club Membership Dues
a. It was suggested to raise membership dues from $10/year to $15/year in order to get more club SWAG (i.e. glasses) and supplies.
b. Vote passed to raise dues to $15/year.
c. Year shall run from January to January.
d. Persons joining mid-year shall have dues pro-rated.
e. Jim (Treasurer) to be in charge of collecting dues.
4. Group Brew
a. Club decided on two club brews:
i. April – IPA. Recipe to be at the discretion of each brewer.
ii. June – Blonde Ale. Recipe to be as close to the recipe in the Jan/Feb issue of BYO magazine. Purpose is to see how each different brewer’s technique and equipment can impact the same recipe.
5. Hop Growing
a. Several members are currently growing their own hops; others are interested in starting.
b. Discussed possible club hop garden: where and how’s TBD.
c. Topic to be discussed further via the JAB message board.
6. IRON BRWER!!!
a. We had the following submissions for the Iron Brewer:
i. Brian’s Maple Porter
ii. Eric’s Belgian “1 ˝” (not quite a Dubbel) with Mexican sugar
iii. Ty’s Dubbel w/ Demara sugar
iv. J.D’s "Sort-of Nutbrown Ale" w/ molasses
v. Jon’s “Stout with a Date”
vi. Kent’s Scottish (sorry Kent, I didn’t jot down your sugar)
vii. Bill’s Tripel w/ brown sugar & Chinese Rock Sugar
viii. Mike’s Dubbel w/ Belgian soft candy sugar
ix. Dave’s blended Wee Heavy (oak & non-oak) w/ maltodextrin
b. Winner by vote was Bill’s Tripel – good job Bill!
7. Meeting then turned social. (“Demented and sad, but social.” – Sorry, I’m a child of the 80’s and grew up on films like “The Breakfast Club”.) We sampled other beers both homebrewed and commercial. Several people played pool in the basement and we sampled Brian’s tap beers – Two Hearted clone and a Nutbrown ale (I think.)
8. Great meeting – thanks to Brian and Kathy for hosting and for the fantastic food!
9. February meeting: date/location TBD
Apologies in advance for any errors or omissions. Let me know if anything needs to be corrected or added - Dave
